The cybersecurity industry is one of the fastest-growing tech industries in the world. Unemployment is almost zero and many people argue that there is a deficit of workers, meaning that there are more empty job postings than there are people who are looking to work. Getoppos has prepared this market trends report to help you understand the unique landscape that we have in cybersecurity today
A skill shortage
As of 2020, cybersecurity has a global deficit of about 3 million and about 64% of cybersecurity workers surveyed think that their organization is affected by a cybersecurity shortage. This represents a huge opportunity for people that have experience in the industry, if you have experience within the industry you can expect to find work relatively easily and at a good price. High demand and low supply typically mean good pay.

The importance of certifications
Certifications continue to be an important aspect of being qualified cybersecurity professional. Cybersecurity continues to be an industry where having one or more certifications is expected in most job postings, even at an entry-level position. Coursera did a study on the top 10 most popular cybersecurity certifications and found that the number of job postings containing their top 10 cybersecurity certifications had grown by 33% since December 2020.

Python is the most in-demand programming language
In 2021 python continues to be the most popular programming language for cybersecurity professionals to learn. Due to its simple syntax, easy to learn, and the fact that you can do almost anything with it, python has grown in popularity and continues to be highly in demand in 2021. Its primary use is in the automation of security tasks through the creation of simple computer scripts. However, even platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS) have integrated python in their platforms in the form of the boto3 python library, used in the automation of processes on the AWS platform.
Increase in cybersecurity spending
Studies show that companies are investing more into cybersecurity than they have in previous years. This means that for any company offering cybersecurity products or services you have a bigger market than you have ever had before. Gartner forecasts that spending on cybersecurity will surpass $150 billion by 2021, an increase of 12.4% over last year.
Social Engineering is on the rise
According to the FBI, phishing incidents almost doubled from 114,702 in 2019 to 241,324 in 2020. There are almost 11 times more phishing incidents in 2020 compared to 2016, which shows that social engineering is becoming a much more popular attack technique for cybercriminals. It shows that hackers realize that the human element of security is the weakest link and they are continuing to target it. The best defense against this is good security awareness training, where employees are made aware of these threats, how to identify them, and how to handle them when they see them. The companies that will be the safest are those that invest in cybersecurity training for their employees.
